From the intro: “Jean Meslier, born 1678, in the village of Mazerny, dependency of the duchy of Rethel, was the son of a serge weaver; brought up in the country, he nevertheless pursued his studies and succeeded to the priesthood. At the seminary, where he lived with much regularity, he devoted himself to the system of Descartes. Becoming curate of Etrepigny in Champagne and vicar of a little annexed parish named Bue, he was remarkable for the austerity of his habits. Devoted in all his duties, every year he gave what remained of his salary to the poor of his parishes; enthusiastic, and of rigid virtue, he was very temperate, as much in regard to his appetite as in relation to women. MM. Voiri and Delavaux, the one curate of Varq, the other curate of Boulzicourt, were his confessors, and the only ones with whom he associated. The curate Meslier was a rigid partisan of justice, and sometimes carried his zeal a little too far. The lord of his village, M. de Touilly, having ill-treated some peasants, he refused to pray for him in his service. M. de Mailly, Archbishop of Rheims, before whom the case was brought, condemned him. But the Sunday which followed this decision, the abbot Meslier stood in his pulpit and complained of the sentence of the cardinal. “This is,” said he, “the general fate of the poor country priest; the archbishops, who are great lords, scorn them and do not listen to them. Therefore, let us pray for the lord of this place. We will pray for Antoine de Touilly, that he may be converted and granted the grace that he may not wrong the poor and despoil the orphans.” His lordship, who was present at this mortifying supplication, brought new complaints before the same archbishop, who ordered the curate Meslier to come to Donchery, where he ill-treated him with abusive language. There have been scarcely any other events in his life, nor other benefice, than that of Etrepigny. He died in the odor of sanctity in the year 1733, fifty-five years old. It is believed that, disgusted with life, he expressly refused necessary food, because during his sickness he was not willing to take anything, not even a glass of wine.”

Our kids are bombarded daily with choices we never had to make. They are surrounded by gangs, weapons, and drugs. Teenage sexual activity has become a fact of life. Abortion a ‘necessary evil.’ And many kids are making these life-altering decisions without the benefit of wise biblical counsel. They don’t know their Creator as Shepherd of their heart, and are dying because of it emotionally, spiritually, and sometimes even physically.

You can do something about it. Ron Hutchcraft and Lisa Hutchcraft Whitmer recognize the urgent needs of our kids and know exactly what will help them–a relationship with Jesus Christ. Take a look into the world of today’s teens. Relationships matter most to them. Music is their language. Sex is expected…and confusing. They are very lonely, wounded, and lost. Sin is not an issue for them, but the results of sin are. The Battle for a Generation explains how to meet the needs of today’s young people right where they live.

¿Y qué me impide contarlo? —A.

“I want yesterday.” That’s all seventeen-year-old Maud can say when she gets the news about her sister: Lucy’s dead, killed in a bomb blast. Without even a body to bury, Maud is left with only questions: How? Why? Maud’s search for answers leads her down the same path her sister took. But all she finds are empty words and more questions. Jeff struggles down a separate but parallel path. His brother, a Marine, has been called up to Vietnam. To the world, Jeff looks the part of a conservative preppy, but inside, he questions the war. But does questioning the war mean he doesn’t support his brother?
It’s 1969, and life in America has become an angry jumble of patriotism and rebellion, cynicism and hope. Jeff and Maud are caught up in the confusion. All they want is stability. What they get is each other. Hopefully, it’ll be enough.

Catherine Reef’s fascinating, in-depth biography explores the life and character of one of America’s greatest poets, incorporating highlights from his writings and photographs of the poet and the America he experienced. In “Leaves of Grass,” first published in 1855, Whitman’s innovative, free poetic style celebrated nineteenth-century America and himself as one of its citizens. His poems captured the spirit of a time when cities grew rapidly, pioneers and railroads crossed the Great Plains, and the Civil War nearly tore the nation apart. This book combines detailed historical information with Whitman’s optimism, love for humanity, and pure joy in living.
