Home, motorcar, servants, the latest fashions: man-about-town Gaston (Louis Jourdan) offers them all to Gigi (Leslie Caron). But she, who’s gone from girlish gawkishness to cultured glamour before our eyes, yearns for something money can’t buy. Producer Arthur Freed, director Vincente Minnelli and a cast rife with Gallic charm join for this lavish winner of nine Academy Awards including Best Picture. Its Alan Jay Lerner/Frederick Loewe songs sparkle like “The Night They Invented Champagne” or caress with title-tune tenderness. “I Remember It Well”, Maurice Chevalier sings to Hermione Gingold. You’ll remember Gigi forever.

One of the most popular movie musicals ever made! Funny Girl follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice, a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar(R) for Best Actress. As the film opens, only her mother believes Fanny can make it in show business. When she gets her first break at Keeney’s Music Hall, her hilarious debut as a roller-skating chorus girl gets her hired as a comedienne. A year later Fanny is working for Florenz Ziegfeld in his famous Follies and brings the house down with an outrageous and unplanned number. Fanny becomes a star, falls in love and marries Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), a handsome gambler whose luck doesn’t hold up. The film’s many memorable songs include “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and the Streisand classic “People.”

This nostalgic history lesson in the treasures of MGM musicals touches upon the obvious highlights–An American in Paris, Singin’ in the Rain, many others–and includes clips of wonderful though more obscure performances by Esther Williams, Jimmy Durante, Eleanor Powell, and even Clark Gable singing and dancing. It’s a film lover’s box of candy and perfect for musical mavens, and getting a chance to see so many legends host the whole affair (many of whom have died since the film’s 1974 release) is as pleasing as the old footage. –Tom Keogh

Though it may be thought of as sacrilegious to remake a classic such as The Wizard of Oz, this 1978 film directed by Sidney Lumet (The Pawnbroker, Serpico) is a vibrant and entertaining retelling of the modern fable, featuring an all black cast in the familiar story of a rural small-town girl whose dreams transport her to a magical world where the battle between good and evil gives the real world a sense of perspective. Rendered in the style of a musical (based on a successful Broadway run), the film benefits from using new contemporary music from stars Diana Ross (Mahogany, Lady Sings the Blues) as Dorothy and Michael Jackson as the shy Scarecrow, with music arranged by Quincy Jones. This visually and musically exciting film is less a remake than a reinvention that stands and dances very well on its own. –Robert Lane

45. Finian’s Rainbow [VHS]

Rated: G (General Audience)

Read Review
A funny thing happened to Finian’s Rainbow in between its debut as a Broadway musical in 1947 and its appearance as a film in 1968. After 21 years, its theme of racial tension in the American South was no longer cutting edge, and the fact that its heroes are a group of sharecroppers called the Rainbow Valley Tobacco Cooperative dates it even further. Add a number of subplots and the heavy hand of a 29-year-old Francis Ford Coppola directing his first and only musical, and the two-and-a-half-hour running time feels bloated. Hermes Pan (best known for the classic Astaire-Rogers movies) is credited with choreographing the overbusy musical numbers, but he was reportedly overruled by Coppola at every turn. Still, there is a lot to enjoy in this movie, most notably Fred Astaire in his last lead role in a musical. Fred plays Finian McLonergan, an Irishman who has traveled to America in hopes of planting a pilfered pot of gold near Fort Knox and watching it grow. Even at 69, Fred shows he is still capable of a sprightly step and warbling “Look to the Rainbow.” Another plus is the casting of ’60s pop icon Petula Clark as his daughter, as she sings with an unaffected loveliness. Finally, the score by Burton Lane and E.Y. Harburg includes two of the best Broadway songs ever written–“Old Devil Moon” and “How Are Things in Glocca Morra?”–as well as the comic ditty “When I’m Not Near the Girl I Love.” –David Horiuchi

Visually beautiful, full of imaginative sets, and splendidly photographed in rich Technicolor, this enchanting fantasy was Twentieth Century Fox’s answer to “The Wizard of Oz”. In a rare departure from her usual screen persona, Shirley plays a selfish, spoiled little girl named Mytyl, who doesn’t appreciate her loving family. Only after a good fairy sends her and her brother (Johnny Russell) on a journey to find “the bird that means happiness” does she end up discovering happiness right in her own home.
